• In reality, though, many workers really need that money. They know they’re losing out on cash, not to mention dinging their own employee record, by doing so. 

  I think that a lot of bosses assume that when their employees call out last minute, it’s because they want to go hang out with their friends, or they just got last minute tickets to a concert in town, and that’s why they’re calling out.

  But like, say you’re a single Mom with kids, and you can’t find anyone to watch your 18 month old. What are you supposed to do? Strap the kiddo on your back and stock grocery shelves while your toddler screeches? No! You have to call out of work. Or what if you’re about to go into a shift, and then you find out that one of your parents is having a dire medical emergency? There’s no way you can go into work not knowing if your Mom or Dad is going to be okay. 

  There are so many things in life like this. They don’t fit into an easy check box, but as an employee, you cannot help or prevent them. 

  And now, thanks to this honestly mean-spirited and cruel new rule from some grocery store higher-ups, workers are going to find themselves in a whole new predicament when they’re stuck with a shift they can’t complete.

• Their store manager was the one who sent this message, but of course this is a decision made by higher ups. 

  Some people also noted that this sets a totally awful presendent. You're telling me that when a sniffling, sneezing, supersick employee wants to call out, that they can't? Please be so serious! Do you really want a worker who's sick as a dog restocking your meats and veggies, or ringing up everyone's food? No! Let them go rest until they feel better. Higher-ups can wipe their tears away with stacks of cash, since this company is worth more than $40 billion dollars. Even if they don't have sympathy, they need tons more common sense.
